Psyllium is een lid van de Plantaginaceae familie, ook bekend als ispaghul. Psyllium is eigenlijk de Angelsaksische term en ispaghul de Franse naam. Meer precies is het het zaad van een plant die "Indische weegbree" wordt genoemd. Deze plant wordt al eeuwenlang door alle beschavingen gebruikt voor verschillende doeleinden.

Psyllium stond al bekend als zeer effectief tegen diarree en constipatie en werd gebruikt voor mensen met aambeien.
